Odoo Community or Enterprise: asking the right questions

A neutral guide to comparing editions through your processes, organisation and overall cost.

Start with the need, not the edition

Before comparing Community and Enterprise, describe what your team needs to do: prepare a quotation, receive a purchase, track a lot or review an indicator. A short list of real situations is more useful than a feature catalogue.

Official documentation describes Community as Odoo’s free and open-source foundation, with Enterprise built on that foundation. Consult Odoo’s official edition information for this starting point. The precise availability of features should be checked for the version and offering under consideration.

Compare the same scope

Ask for both options to be tested against the same representative operations. A useful comparison makes functions, data, users and constraints explicit.

Question What to clarify
Which operations are essential? The workflows to demonstrate before deciding.
Who will use the solution? Roles and access requirements.
Which adaptations are needed? What configuration covers and what requires specific development.
How will it be maintained? Responsibilities, updates and support arrangements.

Consider the overall cost

The budget is more than a licence. Ask for a proposal that separates assessment, configuration, data, customisation, training, any hosting and ongoing support.

Do not assume one edition is always less expensive for a particular company size. Scope and implementation decisions matter. The publisher’s prices and terms should be confirmed when making the decision.

Check continuity arrangements

Ask how your data will be backed up, how customisations will be documented and how future changes will be prepared. Responsibilities should be understandable and agreed.

Prepare for a useful assessment

  1. List three priority challenges.
  2. Identify the people who carry out the relevant operations.
  3. Gather representative documents without unnecessary sensitive information.
  4. Explain your constraints and preferred timeline.
  5. Compare solutions against a written scope.

Modoo Tech’s role is to connect these needs with an appropriate proposal. Community and Enterprise are assessed according to their relevance to your business.
